Of course schools will give out folders with all kinds of paraphernalia in them, but it's absolutely crucial to bring a professional looking notebook to your interview. Whether you know it or not, you're being evaluated by anyone and everyone the moment you walk in the door. Do you greet the security guard? Do you hold open doors before walking in yourself? How do you wear your suit? Is it tailored? If you show up empty-handed to an interview, you're telling everyone who's watching you that you're unprepared. Having a notepad and a pen of your own shows that you're mature, prepared, and serious about your interview. Taking notes throughout your briefs, and even throughout your interview - especially on your own materials - will show everyone you're interested and engaged. Asking questions from your notes throughout the day amplifies that perception.
Often times faculty members will give the interview group permission to leave their belongings behind, either during the tour or during your interview, as you'll be returning to the room later in the day. Most people welcome this invite, but you should not. Bring your notepad with you and carry it in your left hand leaving your right hand free for a friendly handshake or to hold a door. If it's a pain to carry, it's probably too large. Don't bring more than is necessary to an interview (unless you're catching a flight immediately afterward). A small notepad that can fit in your back pocket will suffice. Just have something. If you have photos of mission trips or stuff you've created, bring it along, but do not show it to interviewers unless asked. Photos are great to share with other interviewees when on standby in a common area or during lunch. Faculty and students will be watching how you engage with others. But your interview is about you and your ability to communicate with a stranger. You should be able to explain your work without ever showing it.
These are just a few little nuggets to help you out. Trust me, it's the small things.
