A large part of my drive to become a doctor and desire to help disenfranchised groups stems from my background, and I feel this is an important part of my story.
I am URM... Two of my family members were murdered due to street violence and my father has been in prison my whole life. This is a part of who I am and why I want to go into medicine, which I think I explain well in my personal statement. I have also demonstrated commitment to serving this community through my volunteer work, so I wouldn't say that mentioning this is random. It's pretty much the basis of my story and I tie in medicine from there.
I know it's difficult to answer it without having read it, but I am hoping someone might have an idea. Is this subject matter too personal for a personal statement or is it appropriate to mention in this case?
Thank you.
