Rule Out
OB/Gyn
Liked the medicine/surgery mix, people in the field. However, hours sucked, Gyn sucked, and can't imagine myself working with just women the rest of my life.
Family med
I really enjoyed the diversity of patients and continuity. Aside from that, all the interesting cases go elsewhere, prescriptions, which may or may not make it to the patient, felt like band aids on larger issues, too much social work. Too much sitting at the computer. First rotation which felt like some 9-5 job. At the end of the day, I would't feel like I accomplished much.
General Surgery
If the hours were more like 8-5 pm, I'd seriously consider it. You could show me the coolest thing in the hospital, but if it's at 5 am, I'd rather be asleep.
ENT
I did enjoy seeing patients from young to old. I just didn't find the pathology or bread and butter interesting.
Anesthesiology
Wasn't intuitive to me. Won't feel like I get much enjoyment being the man behind the curtain who keeps the OR patient from dying.
Rad Onc
One of my favorite parts of medicine is thinking through a diagnosis. I don't want to jump straight to tx.
Derm
Seems like a great field but I can't find a passion for it. All skin lesions look the same to me.
Path
Too little human contact.
Psych
Just not for me.
Maybe
EM
Enjoyed the diversity of everything and actually doing things, unlike FM. Too many times in the patient room though, I was thinking "neither of us should really be here right now".
Internal med/Neurology/Peds
Still to come.
Radiology
Not much time seems wasted. IR would be a good path. Not sure if I can get over sitting in a dark room behind a computer for hours.
Seriously considering
Optho
Seems like the best mix of surgery/medicine. Better lifestyle. More of an opportunity to move from hospital setting and start your own practice. Not sure if I can work with just the eye the rest of my life.
Urology
Doesn't have the unpredictability of gen surg. Thankful patients.
