I see the wall of overflowing physician mailboxes in my department and I laugh at people worrying about sending hard copy thank you notes. You're lucky if they actually check their box once a month. I shadowed a doc at another hospital who stopped at his office to grab me a coat and he had a pile of mail that was two months old because he hadn't checked it in that long.
Just send a quick email. That's how 99% of communication is done because academic physicians generally have multiple workspaces (office, clinic, workroom on the floor) and are hard to reach by phone or mail.
