Yes, BU school policy is if you fail a class you repeat whole year! If you get 'D' you can take a remediation class and be promoted. Here is the source -
To be promoted into the next academic year, students must successfully complete all courses
and educational obligations of the first and second semesters of the current academic year.
Specifically, promotions guidelines require that students complete the year with no final grade
of “F,” no more than one final grade of “D,” and a GPA of 2.0 or above. Students not meeting
these minimum requirements will not be eligible for promotion. Courses in which a final grade
of “F” was achieved are not eligible for remediation/re‐examination and must be repeated in
their entirety. Promotion will not be allowed until the failed course(s) has been repeated
successfully.
