I know FM residents that had contracts signed in their first year. Not saying that's a good idea for most people, but usually those residents wanted to go back home in a rural area for practice.
I'm in a 4 year program. Most of my colleagues start looking seriously for jobs in their 4th year, with most having found something by approx New-Year's. Others who know specifically where they'd like to start practicing started looking a little earlier--often halfway through 3rd year.
Lots of jobs say they want to hire "now." But many of those jobs have been unfilled for some time (could be years), so if they find the right applicant, they may be willing to offer you the job more than a few months in advance (like the FM residents I referred to)
