What can I do to increase my chances of getting into a CA residency program?

M1 here, just finished the first semester of school! So I'm attending an allopathic school (not top tier or famous or anything) and would like to ultimately return to California for residency. I am currently interested in primary care but have a special interest in Med-Peds.

From what I understand, the most important factors are:
1. Step 1 scores
2. Clinical rotation grades
3. Interview day performance

And there are other things like letters of recommendation, research, and extracurricular activities. I hear that doing things for residency applications is not like doing things to get into medical school, that is, as a medical student we shouldn't compromise our grades by doing so many activities and that our ECs should be focused. I plan to be strongly involved in a couple of ECs/hobbies since I think continuity is important. I'm not big on doing basic research, but I am reaching out to mentors and professors in doing clinical/translational research or anything related to health disparities and public health.

A lot of my classmates have already taken officer positions in clubs or are starting a few clubs of their own. They kind of make me worried about my own chances, but should I be? Am I on the right track here? I'm thinking about founding a club once school resumes. I don't want to spend too much time dealing with club stuff because school and grades are most important, so I will be working with another friend/classmate in running the club.

Does anyone else have any advice? I get the impression that it's difficult to go back to CA for residency since there are already a lot of CA med students taking the spots. Thanks guys.
