My vote is to congratulate him for acting on his urge to step in on a suspicious situation. I think there are better ways to have gone about it that wouldn't have resulted in him getting essentially executed, especially when you are in a dangerous neighborhood and it is late at night (4 AM).

This should be an interesting topic of discussion - would you put your own life at risk for a complete stranger, as in this scenario? What if it were apparent that the suspect was armed and dangerous, and the risk of losing your life is now an almost certainty?

I personally wouldn't have gotten out of my vehicle, probably just called the cops and got the hell out of there when he took out his gun. Then again, if I saw an old lady fall down on the sidewalk (same time and place as this story), I would also not get out of my vehicle to help her up. Probably offer to call her an ambulance from the safety of my car, and similarly leave the scene.
