I know I can Succeed with the Help of Jesus Christ

I am posting this message because I have realized that there are no posts on SDN about how Jesus Christ can help you attain your goals, no matter what the obstacle may be. I feel that it is very important to remember that God is in control, and he has a plan for everyone. I have found this to be evident in my own life. I spent the majority of my undergraduate career not focusing on my goal of one day becoming a physician. As a result I did not obtain the GPA that I wanted for medical school,...

Bad interview? (Ummm....)

I had an interview last week, and I've been thinking about it more and how it could have went a lot better. On a few questions that caught me off guard, I noticed that I said "um" a lot.. And I feel that I could have answered some questions much more fluently. My interview was about 35 mins (norm is about 40) and I only had 2 questions to ask at the end of my interview.
Some things I feel went well was that I was able to discuss my involvement in my family's business, where I talked about a...

5 year break between medical school and residency to start a family / raise kids

Hi, I have scoured the internet for one case of something close to what I'm about to propose and I haven't found anything!

When I graduate medical school, I want to dedicate the next 5 years to having kids and being a stay at home mom. Ideally, I would also be able to work something out where I could do some research with flexible scheduling and attend a few conferences, but mostly I want dedicated time for the kids. Luckily I do not have to worry about debt/ loans. I'm interested in...

Optometry applicant, need advice

I am an applicant to optometry school for the 2016 entering class. I had been weighing the two options, dental school or optometry school, and landed on optometry after shadowing multiple optometrists and sitting down with them to discuss the profession and where they see it heading, without shadowing a single dentist. All I heard was positives, no negatives, a relatively low stress environment with a great earning potential. Any mention of potential hardships was shrugged off (e.g. the...

How to become oral surgeon..? without medical school?

Hey everyone so my friend got her wisdom teeth taken out, but the dr that did it didnt go to medical school (read his bio online).. do you think he may have just omitted it or is it possible to be allowed to take wisdom teeth out without having to go to medical school and dental school like I previously thought? Like through an advanced residency or something? thanks in advance.

P.S Not all her wisdom teeth were fully above the gum line

Advanced interventional numbers

How important is it to receive training in SCS, intrathecal pumps, kyphoplasty, vertebroplasty, discograms, etc during fellowship training? There is incredible variability in the number of these procedures performed in each training program. Some programs perform almost zero implants and instead refer them all to neurosurgery. These programs seem to infer that the complications and lifestyle associated with these procedures make it easier to refer out. Also implied is the lack of...

How to approach "what osteopathic experience do you have?" when you have none?

I never shadowed a DO [not for the lack of trying] or saw a DO perform OMM/OMT. I have read The DOs by Norman Gevitz and other material about osteopathic physicians. I have also watched a lot of videos which showcase OMM. If asked what osteopathic experience I have, how bad would it be to say none, but add what I have learned/seen from my research about the profession? I'm not sure mentioning YouTube is appropriate in the interview setting, but I really did learn a lot about how OMM works...

A good dentist is personable and is someone who can put people at ease. Most of a dentist’s workday is spent caring for patients. In addition, dentists have to work closely with their office staff including assistants and hygienists, so they should enjoy a lot of interaction with others.

Ok so for ochem destroyer question 62 on the 2012 destroyer...the question asks which of the following reactions would yield an alkene. The answer is 2-iodobutane reacted with NaOCH3. However why couldn't t butyl iodide reacted with CH3OH also create an alkene? isnt there a possibility of E1 in this case?

Quitting in the middle of medical school

I talked to my friend in M2 a little while ago and she told me that a good chunk quit during their first year.

Some thought they weren't smart enough.... And the majority that quit had a spouse and children.

So from medial school students and pre-meds... What are some stories you have heard about people quitting medical school?

How many DO schools should I apply to?

Hello Everybody,

I posted last month in the ‘What are my chances?’ forum for advice on whether I stood a chance at DO schools this cycle. I received a list of schools that I would stand the best chance at this cycle (newer programs). My main question is how many schools should I apply to? I know my stats are mediocre so I’m not sure if I should just stick with the list provided or apply to a larger quantity. I don’t want to apply to more schools if I don’t stand any chance at all. I always...

Anyone else losing interest?

I have completely lost interest in medical school, medicine,..science in general actually which is making it impossible to study. Sucky timing considering step 1 is 4 short months away and I don't want end up in rural North Dakota for a Family med residency.Unfortunately I do not have the financial means of paying back loans if I drop out, and I'd feel like a total loser if I was to unsuccessfully go through medical school. 1yr of research experience?

So this year I'm going to be quite busy with school and work, but I also need to get some research experience. I'm just not sure it will all be possible, so the latter might have to wait. I will be doing my thesis next year, so that is a guaranteed bit of research, but I assume that won't be enough on its own? I could probably focus on getting some research experience next year on the side (like helping out at a lab), while doing my own thesis. Would that be enough research for most mid...

A new danger for EM docs...

Gypsy curses.

I had a patient yesterday demand that I refill his chronic pain meds, and give him a knee immobilizer. And when I didn't, him and his family put a gypsy curse on me.

The threat is real people. First we had to deal with physical assaults, now we have to deal with assaults on our fate and auras. What's next? Our feng shui?

For schools that don't require the PCAT...

Do they still look to see if you took it, and if you took it do they look at your score and consider it in admissions?

In other words...
Does it help to take and do well on the PCAT? (for schools that don't require it)
Does it count against you if you do poorly on the PCAT, or if you don't take the PCAT?

Or do these schools not look at or consider it at all?

Thanks in advance.

Retake or Nah?

Hey, all! I am graduating next semester with a GPA ~3.3. I just took the DAT and got the following scores:

Biology: 19
General Chemistry: 18
Organic Chemistry: 17
RC:22
QR: 18
Perceptual Ability: 15

TS: 18
AA: 19

As you can see, the real standout here is my perceptual ability. I'm happy with the rest of my scores, though. Is it worth retaking the DAT to see if I can improve on this or am I better off taking my chances with a low PA?

Any tips on how to smooth out crown preps? NERB coming up.

Pharmacy Job Market/Outlook

Will there be too many new graduates in the future? Things to consider:

Mentioning specific program in personal statement

Hello everyone, my advisor told me that for my top choice programs, I should tailor my personal statement to specifically mention the names of those programs in the personal statement. Has anyone else done this? I don't want to come off as too presumptuous, but I'd be glad to do this if it could help.

Ridiculous Tuition

Hey Guys,

So I'm taking an online psychology class partnered through a local state school. The class costs $200/credit (3 credit class), has a $150 nebulous "Distance Learning Fee", and requires you to buy a $90 "homework assignment access code" through a third party. This class has 400 students. That means that they are getting 400*(200*3+150+90)=$336,000 for teaching this class. The class consist of the following: prerecorded lectures from awhile ago, 3 online multiple choice tests....

Can a doctor function as a paramedic?

I am an EMT in Paramedic school, and hope to eventually attend medical school. I love the fire department and would like to volunteer for as long as I'm physically able to. If I keep my paramedic certification current could I function as a physician? I know PAs who were also paramedics who still functioned as such but someone told me that doctors cannot because of their unrestricted medical license. Paramedics function under their medical license similarly to a PA, and this person said one...

Entropy of a system as universe expands

I just encountered this problem in my EK book and am a bit confused:
All of the following are examples of processes which increase system entropy EXCEPT:

A. the expanding universe
B. aerobic respiration
C. melting ice
D. building a bridge

I initially said D (which is correct) but then I saw that the question specified entropy of a system so I put A. My reasoning was that the expanding universe would increase the entropy of the universe and not the system and figured it might have been one...

Has anyone applied to the Still Scholars Early Acceptance program? It says that the program is available to any students in a U.S. four year institution, however I feel like it probably accepts students that are affiliated with the school. Shigella vs. EHEC in Colonic Mucosal Invasion

In FA, it's stated that one of the major ways EHEC differs from Shigella is how it "does not invade host cells." I've also seen in explanation to one of the UWorld questions how Shigella differs from many other enteropathogenic organisms becuase it causes disease through "direct invasion of colonic mucosal cells."

But how does EHEC, without also "invading" mucosal cells, inhibit the protein synthesis taken place in the mucosal cells by removing adenine from rRNA of 60S ribosomal...

So this year I'm going to be quite busy with school and work, but I also need to get some research experience. I'm just not sure it will all be possible, so the latter might have to wait. What do you guys do for people with elevated BPs, say...200+/100+ who complain of headache, but no neurological deficits by history or exam? CT head? Just treat the headache? Is this symptomatic hypertension?

I've had some attendings not scan the head, just treat the head, hope the BP comes down afterwards. I guess I'm a little confused because if someone came in with a BP of 200+/100+ and said "chest pain" or "Sob" that usually buys them a cardiac workup for end organ damage.

Is NBME score still correlating to the real exam?

Hello guys,

I was just wondering if NBME is still accurate in the prediction of the actual USMLE step 1 score. I came up with guys who had the exam in the summer and eventually achieved a very lower score (>20-30 difference) compared to their NBME predictions (250s-270s). Do you have any recent experience? How many DO schools should I apply to?

Hello Everybody,

Secondary question on what you would do if you couldn't be a physician. What do adcoms want?

U Cincinnati asks a question about what you would do if you lived in a world without disease or injury and no doctors are needed.

What are adcoms looking for out of this question?

My honest answer would probably be politics so I could try and fix our broken political system. But I'm not sure if politics is a good thing to write about in a secondary.

My other answer would be psychology since a world without mental illness doesn't preclude grief, stress and anger. Is this a cop out?
