WAMC 4.0 sGPA 2 MCAT scores...

Hey all,

First time poster but long timer lurker.

I am applying this cycle. I had already added 15 schools but am looking to add a few more. Open to MD or DO.

First MCAT: 25
Second MCAT: 513

sGPA: 4.0
cGPA: 3.98

>2000 hours of being a medical assistant
>250 hours research
~150 hours non-clinical volunteer

Any school recommendations? I'm worried about my MCAT since I took the old one AND the new one...

UIC vs. LUC

I've searched many a forum and review sites such as yelp, yet I am having difficulty forming opinions on and distinguishing the differences between the University of Illinois at Chicago and Loyola University Chicago. See, I am interested in pre-med, and if I'm not mistaken, UIC and LUC both have their own medical schools and own sort of "unpaved yet trodden road" to medical school. These roads are UIC's gppa and LUC's...

should i email my references to let them know they may be contacted?

Should i make sure my references in the AMCAS activities section know they are listed and may be contacted by a lot of medical schools? or am i overthinking this?

I realized no one made a thread for 2015 so decided to make one. Anyone take the January 6 or 22 test? There's a Feb date coming up soon too. How was it? What did you use to study and would recommend to future test-takers? Anything particularly high-yield? Good luck everyone!

Please Help. Dismissed from Med School after Senior Year

This is just a horror story, but my school dismissed me because I did not pass the USMLE Step 2 exam on my 3rd attempt. The school requires its students pass Step 2 to be awarded the MD degree, and has as its policy a 3-Attempts Rule. So, despite my completing and passing all my required classes and rotations and in-school exams (several in which I received an Honors grade), my school dismissed me per this horrific policy of theirs.

I checked the USMLE site and they say they recommend...

As I'm sitting here on 3rd shift, I was searching for an interview attire thread for this year but found nothing. So since I have my first interview in August with LECOM I wanted to see what others were doing.

I'm thinking about a light grey suit, blue checkered shirt, and maybe going with a bowtie... What is everyone else doing??

Bootcamp difficulty compared to actual DAT

Hey everyone,

Apologies if this isn't the right place for this question. It's my first time posting here after lurking for a while.

I have my DAT in about a week (the 31st) and I have been taking a bunch of practice tests; mainly DAT Bootcamp. I seem to score well on the sciences (mid to high 20s) but drop to 18-19 on the QR and PAT sections. I have gone through Chad's videos and destroyer for QR and did great there but I find Bootcamp to be more challenging. As for PAT, I did most of my...

Disadvantages of applying to US med schools as a Canadian?

What I do know (at least what I think I know) so far:
  • Limited choices for schools because many only take US residents
  • Financial aid pretty much out of the question
  • Canadians are viewed favorably over other International applicants
That being said,
  • Are Canadian applicants placed in a separate pool?
  • Considering I get good enough stats for a certain school, are those numbers given an asterisk, or would I be held to the same standard as domestic applicants?...

What counts as a presentation?

For instance, in the two summers following my junior and senior years I was a research intern at a hospital. At the end of the summer, all of the students presented the research they had done to the medical and research staff of the hospital as well as administrative personnel. It was not a formal conference or anything like that. Would this count?

Pharmacy school admission statistics

Anyone know of a decent source on this subject? Some colleagues and I were discussing the decline in quality of pharmacy students rotating through recently. We've all heard anecdotes of sub-3.0 GPA, score of 30 on PCAT type of students being accepted, and the general consensus is that admission standards have dropped in a lot of schools recently.

The latest data I could find was from 2008:...

Its taken me a while to seek advice about my situation, but time is forcing me to make a decision. I was dismissed from pharmacy school the summer before 2nd year in 2007 after failing my 4th course. At first I came to the conclusion that I didn't want to do pharmacy and sabotaged myself in a few classes, placed on probation, cut off from the parental lifeline, got back in working part time to cashflow bills and ended up biting the last failure in the summer. Changing Temperature in equilbrium reactions

Good morning all,

I am having a issue with grasping this concept. I just want to make sure I am understanding it correctly.

In equilibrium reactions,

Increasing Temp: Shifts Reaction to the Left(Reverse Reaction) to consume extra heat and make more of Reactants.
---> Making this an endothermic Reaction?

Decreasing Temp: Shifts reaction to the right (forward reaction) to produce extra heat and make more products
----> Making this an exothermic reaction?

Is this correct?

Thanks!

My school offers a pharmacy tech course that I've been thinking about taking. I've been doing a lot of research and everyone says don't pay for a class. I was wondering if I could just by a prep book and then take the exam? Is that allowed or do you have to take a course first? I was also thinking about maybe applying to Walgreens for their training program but I heard retail pharmacy usually overworks you and they don't teach you a lot. Any advice? Acid/Base Chemistry with Amino Acids EK Question

I understand why the answer choice A is correct, but why isn't D correct also. If Arginine's side chain, when protonated, is more stable that means it's less likely to give off a proton and therefore has a higher pKa.

For instance, OH- has a high pKa because its conjugate acid (H2O) is stable.

How is everyone managing interview costs?

The average plane ticket costs 300-400 dollars for a domestic flight in the USA. Add to that car rentals and hotel stays, plus in my case having to take off of work every time I get one.

Currently I have just a few interview invites this season, but I'm starting to realize how ridiculously high these costs are going to get.

Much is written here about the importance of demonstrating altruism. Given an applicant pool filled with extremely high achieving individuals with generally large ambitions, and given that one can imagine a large percentage of candidates possess at least, for lack of better words, a "healthy" dose of narcissism, how do (or do they?) adcoms suss out whether candidates have the kind of narcissism that most don't want to see in their physicians? Generally, the better grade and not the difficulty level of the course is much more important to an adcom

You have several things to considered in this:

1) Some medical school's previously had statements on there sites saying something along the lines... I have a 3.55 undergraduate gpa (3.62 science gpa) but my pharmacy school gpa is a 3.92. I slacked off during undergrad even though it was much easier than pharmacy school.

Chances of Matching?

Hi, everyone:

Quick question.

Some background. I'm an M3 that recently passed Step 1 on my second attempt with a 198. From my first attempt, I had a 30 point increase. Plenty of volunteering during M1-M2; leadership positions as well. 5 years of research experience prior to starting med school with publications and abstracts. Have NOT started M3 rotations yet. Passed all my M1-M2 classes. Our school is Pass/Fail.

With that said, what are my chances for matching in Peds any program from...

AMCAS downgraded all my credit hours! please help

Hi all - my uni, Byrn Mawr College, sends transcripts with the confusing "credit unit" instead of credit hour, where 1 credit unit = 4 credit hour. This is explicitly stated on the transcript, but amcas took all of my 4 credit hour classes and changed them to 1.0 credit hours. This really messes up the GPA weighting and makes me think schools won't think I took full semesters in college (like, none of my undergrad would be considered full time - how does amcas think I got a degree?) Why?

Why when a doctor is leaving in less than a month would you continue to have new patients on their schedule???

It's really grinding my gears. I've gotten nowhere trying to address it.

They say access is bad and patients will get upset being told they have to wait even longer. They're still getting upset. But this way they also get to take it out on me.

Why?

CVS took me in as technician, but not willing to change me into an intern

I am a foreign pharmacy graduate with an intern license in MN. I was taken in as a technician but I need to be an intern in order to get my intern hours. I spoke to my PIC and she said that the reason is that they don't want to give me a job assurance. I don't want a job assurance - just need to fulfill my intern requirements. My state doesn't let me work an a technician to complete my hours. Has anyone else been in a similar situation? Any suggestions? I am frustrated!!!

Hello. I am a medical student from Eastern Europe and I have a passion for surgery . I'm really interested in trauma surgery and it looks like the plastics ( I'm not talking about breast, lips and aestetics in general) has a huge amount of incredible and life-saving operations and also it doesn't focus only on one part of the human body . So, I'd like to know what are the requierements for an EU citizen to fit in a trauma plastic program ?

Simple math question

Hi all, I'm stuck on the calculations of a simple math problem. EK and wolfram alpha both have the same answer, I just don't get why it's correct.

The solution states that:
4(5.4*10^-3)^3 is about(=) 20*10^-9

However, it is to my understanding that the 5.4 should be cubed as well.. Can anyone clarify??

Should I transfer credits?

I'm currently at a community college and have taken quite a lot of courses already. I'm planning on transferring to a 4 year University in the spring, to major in Biology. I was wondering if I should transfer some non-scientific credits from the courses I've taken already to the 4 year University. Necessary to take hardest prereqs?

Obviously it's best to have the highest GPA possible. One of the best ways to maximize GPA is to take the easiest classes possible (prereqs included). Do med schools look down on applicants who deliberately take easier versions of prereqs? For example, taking "baby" bio instead of bio 101. Both would still have labs. Is there a disadvantage?

Question about D.O. Family Practitioners..

Hi,

I have a quick question: I know that within the medical community DOs and MDs are--for all intents and purposes--viewed equal and indistinguishable in almost every objective way, but I was curious about patient perception.

I have been told time and time again that "patient's don't care" whether their physician is a DO or MD. Well, I am just having a hard time accepting this (and I want to go to a DO school mind you). I am in college, and many of my friends have no idea what a DO...

Im contemplating if I should do a post bacc this year (32+ credits) or just take a few classes (~16 credits). I recently got accepted as a non-degree student to a university near where I live.

Heres a quick background story:

I graduated from a 4 year university in 2013 with a degree in biology with an overall 2.82 GPA.
I enrolled into an SMP right away and completed it in 3 semesters with a degree in biomedical science with an overall 3.56 GPA (each...

What is the purpose of The Match?

Why don't residency applications function like most other application processes in existence including med school apps - you apply, interview, then get told if you are accepted/waitlisted and choose from the places you were accepted to?

It seems like it would be much simpler to interview at a top choice then if a student gets in they can relax and cancel their other interviews, instead of wasting thousands of dollars and spending several extra months with anxiety about where the lottery...

90% of future physicians not ready for private practice...

http://ift.tt/1SBmpvX=

Medical students and residents thirst for practical, business-of-medicine education and mentorship. Training programs sorely lack resources or inclination to deliver it. Delivering a basic "mini-MBA" curriculum to residents via a distance or on-line format would be a great product....

Compilation of April, May, and June Final Scores, Preliminary Percentiles, and Practice Exam Scores

Hi everyone,

Sorry for posting this everywhere. I think it deserves its own thread considering the work we have put into it and the interest people have shown.

mcatjelly and I compiled data on final scores, preliminary percentiles, the AAMC full length, and company exams in the following google doc. Please check it out and give us feedback! Also, if your information is missing or incorrect, please edit it!

PLEASE DO NOT QUOTE! The embedded sheet will make this thread very slow if it is...

Would this be controversial?

For a secondary question which asks how I've come to appreciate other cultures, I'm thinking of including a visit to the Islamic Mosque open house.

With ISIS and everything that is going on right now, would this be received negatively?

Just to note, this post means no offense. I'm just being neurotic...

Why does hypoventilation not increase A-a gradient?

I found this on another thread, but it didn't explain it well. So I started a new thread.

If V/Q is less than 1, then A-a gradient will increase.
e.g. pulmonary edema: fluid in alveoli prevents capillary blood from being 100% saturated, then that blood mixes with saturated blood from non-fluid filled alveoli, lowering PaO2.

But if I breathe really slowly, doesn't this also decrease PaO2?
Blood is being perfused at a normal rate, but ventilation has decreased, right? And since PAO2 is...

Most aggravating patient of the day...

Pt: My doctor hasn't refilled my prescription for terbinafine and they are not answering their phones. I hate this healthcare system. I about to move to Canada.
Me: We have already given you a 3 day emergency supply and faxed you doctor several times. As I explained the other day, the pharmacy cannot dispense more than the single 3 day emergency supply until a new prescription is issued.
Pt: It's the damn government, isn't it? You know they told me not to stop taking this.
Me: No, it is your...

I'm starting college

I am going to be a freshman at The Citadel this fall. I am curious on what gpa I need to get and what mcat score I need to get to go to medical school.

My senior year of high school, I had an 88.5 average.

I'm starting college

My class is like 80% foreigners

So apparently trying to integrate into a diverse class means that I'm acknowledging cultural differences which makes me racist.

Thanks for clearing it up /thread

I/O Psy D Programs?

I was searching for adjunct positions and came across this new Touro PsyD program - in Human and Organizational Psych. Are there typically PsyD programs in specialties other than clinical?

The answer is supposed to be C. EK says B, explains (incorrectly) why it's B, and it's not posted on the EK errata thread.

Ask a 4th year dental student anything :)

Hey guys, I have not been on here in a while (or at least not posted much lately). Many of you likely don't recognize my username, but I used to be quite active and have been on here for a while if that sort of thing is important to you. For what its worth, I thought it might be a helpful to some of you if you had a question and maybe I could answer it for you. Know that my experiences are anecdotal and will reflect my experiences at my school only. Hopefully it helps one or two of you guys...

Where to go from here?

Hello folks on SDN! Long time lurker, first time poster.

During my sophomore year of high school, I earned my EMT-B certification. This is where my interest in medicine began. I went to community college for a year after high school with the intent of becoming a paramedic, but decided medical school would be a better fit for me. I transferred to my state university (Rutgers) and have completed 2 semesters thus far. Here are my current stats:

-3.5 years at a busy volunteer ambulance corps...
