Which one is more important for medical school applicants, high BCMP GPA or cGPA for science major?

Worried about lack of experience

Hi everyone! I've been panicking somewhat about my situation and would love to have some advice on how to go forward.

I was planning to submit my applications for multiple optometry schools (UCBSO, PUCO, SUNY, OSUCO, SCCO) in time for Fall 2016, but I have not had much luck in shadowing for optometrists. To be honest, I probably only have had about 10 hours of shadowing hours for one optometrist, and am struggling to find other places that are willing to let me shadow. Most of the clinics...

Wait..can medicine really NOT be for me??

Wondering if anyone has experienced something similar. Currently I'm in my last year of college, I've completed all science classes, applied to medical school, finished secondaries, have 2 II's thus far, so thats a brief sum up.

What has caused the question:
- Facing a school year with no science classes I find myself reinvigorated about school. I am reading for fun once again, pursuing interests I haven't touched for some time, and genuinely excited to wake up in the morning.

Dr. Oliver Sacks passed away :(

I first came across Dr. Oliver Sacks' works in my medical humanities class when we read "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat". It was certainly an amazing read. Also, I listened to Fresh Air's interview with him on NPR and its amazing some of the stuff he has been through (including taking hallucinogenic drugs for experimentation, etc.)

Truly saddened to hear he passed away. He certainly drew me to Neurology and I had an amazing time shadowing neurologists.

Bay Area Post-Baccalaureates?

There are no recent posts on this matter, so I thought I'd reopen the discussion. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

I read on an earlier post from 6 years ago that Mills College has a widely acclaimed Pre-Med Post-Bacc that sends folks to UCSF and such. Now I'm interested in doing this program to (1) improve my institutional GPA, (2) better gauge my competence in the health sciences (3) prepare for the MCAT (4) ultimately prepare for a DO program sometime in the future.

Job Outcomes for Clinical Psych PhDs

After reading through many threads in this subforum, I'm beginning to understand the job market for Clinical Psych PhD graduates. It seems that the vast majority go either full-time into clinical practice or they become professors. Both clinical practice and research appeal to me, but it seems that few jobs offer the ability to perform both. What type of positions would allow a person to do both, and how available are such jobs?

Hi guys,

One of my evaluators has requested to send a physical copy to OptomCAS. I was wondering if anyone has done this before? On its FAQ section, it is mentioned that I need to indicate the mailing address of the evaluator as well as printing off a form for the evaluator to include in the evaluation. However, I am having trouble accessing the form. Can anyone give me some instructions on this?

Thanks so much in advance!

2. Suit color? AAMC recommends sticking with navy, brown, charcoal, and gray. I tend towards all black everything--would this be...

Glottic-Ca and IMRT

I was wondering how many of you use IMRT / VMAT for early stage (T1-T2) glottic cancer?

Do you contour it the same way you would treat with 3D or lateral fields?
Or do you try to spare tissue, like the contralateral cord, if there is no involvement going at the midline.

Do you use IGRT? I'm kind of troubled with IMRT, since its a moving target every time the patient swallows.

Would you guys have taken loans if your parents were willing to pay for your schooling?

So my mother talked to me about paying for my PA education by selling one of her houses recently (i know this is premed but the PA forums are so dead =/). I never expected or wanted her to cover my graduate education cost as she already paid for my UG. However, I wanted to hear out people who has taken out loans' opinion on this situation. For me it's kind of a pride/i feel bad thing if i accept the offer. How much easier would your life be without those loans? Does it even matter?

We are aware of the so-called "publish-or-perish" mentality common in academia: it's important/necessary for researchers to publish their findings rapidly to fulfill their obligations/get more funding/acquire tenure. Does the medical world say race is a social construct or a real genetic phenomenon?

What is the medical world's take on race? Question about hyperventilation

If a person is hyperventilating, the blood has:

A) increased saturation of hemoglobin with O2.

B) a higher level of CO2.

C) a higher pH level.

D) an increase in carbonic acid.

Every time I look back at old notes it all says that hyperventilation causes an high pp. CO2 and thus increase in [H+] which means lower pH. I choose B, but the answer is C. C is completely contradictory to my notes so I thought I'd ask you guys to help explain why it's right! HELP :D

Will physicians be taxed out the a** if Bernie Sanders is president?

I'm not going to medical school for the money, and I like 90% of what Bernie Sanders stands for. However, he has historically been for a very high tax rate for the top income earners. Like most med students, I'm dropping at least 200 k for the pleasure of a medical education. How are we going to pay that back if we have a massive tax hike for the "rich"? Do these tax rates account for the fact that you have 200 k in loans accumulating at 6.8%?

MD student regretting not MD/PhD

Hey all,

I am an M1 student at a big research school and I am starting to question my decision to do an MD instead of an MD/PhD.

I structured my 4 years of undergrad life around bench research and, to a great degree, it kept me sane. The lab was a relaxing and happy place for me. Even my mentors and other researchers commented how my enjoyment of research was uncommon. At the end of my tenure, my PI half pleaded with me to do a PhD instead of an MD.

Despite all of this research, I only...

My personal USMLE Problem( yes I think i am queen :p)- Biochem Thread

Hey guys,

So i have stated a biochem thread please bear out with me.

I came across this note:
In all, translation uses 4 high-energy phosphate bonds per amino acid:
  • 2 during aminoacylation (tRNA charging): ATP → AMP (A for Activation)
  • 1 during tRNA "loading" into the A-site: GTP → GDP (G for Gripping)
  • 1 during translocation: GTP → GDP (G for Going places)
I just wanna know why 2 during amionoacylation. Isn't it just one bond bcs ATP is broken to AMP and PPi?
